Developed by Ron Dennis, Ed.D., since 1985, Breath as Postural Process™ (BPP) reveals a specific psycho-physical coordination and practice that not only optimizes gaseous exchange in normal waking breathing but also supports overall Use by distributing the abdominal contents and forces so as to provide optimal musculoskeletal and hydraulic support within the body. BPP is now promulgated as the logical and practical realization in the Alexander Technique of F. M. Alexander's teaching on the breath as mainly given in his 1907 pamphlet The Theory and Practice of a New Method of Respiratory Re-Education but virtually absent from the post-FMA Technique (1955-present).
BPP is typically taught by Teachers of the Alexander Technique at three levels of certification: Teacher, Trainer, and Diplomate. Teachers work with their own and others' students, Trainers certify Teachers, Diplomates certify Trainers. This tri-level hierarchy allows for the teaching to be maintained and broadcast in a loose but controlled structure aiming at flexibility, stability, and longevity. Detailed information about certification is available in the Candidates' Information document on the Resources page.
This website provides both a directory of BPP Teachers and a repository of pertinent literature.
"We don't teach BPP simply because it aligns convincingly with Alexander’s writing on the breath, we teach it because it's a physiologically sound, effective, and practical means-whereby for cultivating an existential dimension of Use of Self. The very fact of this alignment, however, strongly supports the inclusion of Breath as Postural Process™ as an integral part of all Alexander Technique education."
